The role of brushes in high-performance motors
Brushes play a key role in traditional brushed DC motors. A brushed DC motor is a type of motor that uses brushes and electrical contact between the brushes and the rotating motor shaft to reverse the direction of current. The following is the role of brushes in high-performance motors:
Current direction reversal:The brushes of a brushed DC motor are responsible for reversing the direction of current as the motor rotates. This is achieved by electrically contacting conductive brushes connected to the rotor of the motor. This process of reversing the direction of the current allows the motor to rotate continuously.
Maintain brush-to-rotor contact:The contact between the brush and the motor rotor must be maintained to ensure the proper flow of current. In high-performance motors, this requires brushes with excellent wear resistance and electrical conductivity to reduce friction and electrical resistance.
Adjust the motor performance:By changing the material and design of the brushes, the performance of the motor can be adjusted. For example, selecting a high-performance brush material can improve the efficiency and power density of the motor.
Managing brush wear:Due to the friction between the brush and the rotor, the brush will wear out over time. In high-performance motors, effective mechanisms need to be designed to manage brush wear to ensure the reliability and longevity of the motor.
It should be noted that although brushed DC motors are still used in some applications, in some high-performance applications, brushless DC motors (without traditional brushes) are more common because they usually have higher efficiency and lower maintenance requirements.
